Tigers Open Spring Break Trip With Win Over Defiance

HILTON HEAD, SC - The Wittenberg men's tennis team opened its annual Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, SC, with a convincing 7-2 victory over Buckeye state rival Defiance.

The win was Wittenberg's fourth of the 2013-14 campaign without a defeat. Defiance fell to 3-2.

The Tigers started off strong, winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior Tyler Strong (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) teamed with freshman Juan Mena (Quito, Ecuador/Colego Amrcano-Quito) to win at No. 1, while sophomore Stas Pakhomov (Richmond, British Columbia/Sir Winston Churchill) and freshman Akbar Tiwana (Lahore, Pakistan/Aitchison) were victorious at the second position.

In singles, Pakhomov and Mena were 6-0, 6-0 winners at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. Strong pulled out a three-set win at No. 4, sophomore Mitchell Patterson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) added a win at No. 5 and freshman Sean Munson (Chicago, Ill./Roycemore) rounded things out with a win at No. 6.

The Spring Break trip continues with a pair of matches on Tuesday, March 11, against Penn St.-Behrend and Case Western.
