Tigers Perform Well In Home Flighted Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg men's tennis team hosted a Flighted Tournament Sept. 16-17 at the David B. & Georgiana S. Albright Tennis Complex, and the Tigers turned in some solid results against an outstanding field that included scholarship programs Northern Kentucky and Ohio Dominican and regionally ranked NCAA Division III rival Ohio Northern.

There were four different flights of singles matches and two flights of doubles. First-round losers were guaranteed at least two matches via a consolation bracket for each flight.

Sophomore Sam Wilke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) won his first-round match in the White Flight of the singles competition, home to players from each of the four teams that play in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions. Junior Sergio Fishkin (Minsk, Belarus) won his first-round match as the No. 1 seed in the Green Flight, which included players in the No. 5 and 6 singles positions. In addition, sophomore Joe Marra (Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls) won a first-round match in the Fisher Flight, which included players from the teams who do not typically play in the top six positions.

In doubles, Wilke paired with freshman Alexey Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia) to reach the semifinals in the B Flight.

The Fisher Flight back draw included numerous Wittenberg players, and junior Nick Ludwig (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) came out on top with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the final over freshman teammate Jialang Woo (Shanghai, China).
