Tigers Lose NCAC Opener To Denison

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers opened North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action with a 9-0 loss to visiting Denison.

The loss dropped Wittenberg to 9-4 overall on the season, while Denison, the fifth-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region, improved to 6-4.

The Big Red swept the doubles courts, although Wittenberg's three teams competed well on a cold, sunny afternoon. The widest margin of victory was just 8-4.

In singles, all six matches were decided in straight sets, with five Wittenberg players losing by a 6-3 score in one of the two sets — freshman Tyler Strong (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) at No. 2, sophomore Sergio Fishkin (Minsk, Belarus) at No. 3, freshman Sam Wilke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) at No. 4, senior Rob Lehner (Westerville, Ohio/DeSales) at No. 5, and freshman Jonathan Mueller (Bexley, Ohio/Hartley) at No. 6.

The Tigers return to action Saturday with a pair of matches scheduled at Wabash — first against the host Little Giants and then against regional powerhouse Calvin.
