Tigers Win Big At St. Joseph's (Ind.)

RENSSELAER, Ind. — The Wittenberg Tigers bounced back from a season-opening loss at Cedarville to take a pair of decisive victories over Calumet and St. Joseph's (Ind.).

The wins pushed the Tigers to 2-1 and provided momentum for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Tournament at Washington University, Sept. 25-28.

Against Calumet, Wittenberg won big at eight of the nine courts, including three doubles wins in which the Tigers lost just four total games. In the singles matches, Wittenberg allowed just four games on the first four courts as well.

Against St. Joseph's, Wittenberg nearly duplicated the domination of the day's first match. A doubles sweep was followed five wins in six singles matches, including a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing at No. 5 by senior Rob Lehner (Westerville, Ohio/DeSales). That completed a perfect 4-0 day for Lehner, who is returning in 2009-10 after missing all of last season due to injury. Freshman Sergio Fishkin (Minsk, Belarus)also was unbeaten on the day, impressively winning both No. 1 singles matches in straight sets.
