Sewanee, Tennessee - Wittenberg men's basketball kicked off the 2023-24 season with a convincing 75-50 win over Covenant on the opening night of the Lon Varnell Classic, hosted by Sewanee University.

The Tigers jumped on top early and pulled away from there. Wittenberg led by 15 points at halftime, and Covenant never got any closer over the final 20 minutes.

Wittenberg shot 52% from the field, including a 7-of-19 performance from three-point range, and the Tigers held a 35-30 edge on the boards. Perhaps the key stat in the game was a mere four turnovers by Wittenberg, compared to 13 for Covenant.

Individually, junior Trey Killens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason) was outstanding with game-highs of 23 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. He hit 9-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-5 from long distance in 32 minutes of action.

Freshman Tyler Galluch (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) added 11 points in 16 minutes off the bench, and junior Cameron Harrison (Eaton, Ohio/National Trail) was the Tigers' other double-figures scorer with 10. Senior Daniel Asher (Indanapolis, Indiana/Roncalli) tied Killens for the game-lead in rebounds with seven.

Wittenberg will wrap up the season-opening competition with a game against Bob Jones University on Saturday, also in the Lon Varnell Classic at Sewanee.
