Tyre Smith was a leader on Wittenberg's defense as a freshman, and he was recognized with NCAC Newcomer of the Year honors.

After posting records of 7-3 overall and 6-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), Wittenberg placed seven players on the 2023 All-NCAC honor roll, announced by the league office on November 16.

  • Second-Team: OL Wyatt Osterhage, LB Tyre Smith (Newcomer of the Year), Christian Sweet
  • Third-Team: QB Max Milton, WR Tyler May, WR Dean Tate, DL Eli Renick

Freshman inside linebacker Tyre Smith (Sarasota, FL/Riverview HS) was named the NCAC's Newcomer of the Year as the top player in the league in his first year of collegiate competition in the sport of football. The second-team All-NCAC selection wasted little time finding his footing on the gridiron this fall as the Tigers' top linebacker. In 10 games, the rookie totaled 70 tackles (36 solo, 34 asst.) with seven tackles for a loss (39 yards), 3.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. His sacks rank him top-7 in the NCAC, while his overall tackles, solo tackles and assisted tackles all rank in the top 15 and his tackles-for-loss rank in the top-20 in the league. Smith is Wittenberg's ninth overall Newcomer of the Year, and first since Jimmy Dehnke was named in 2012.
