Coach Wagner has served as the Wittenberg baseball pitching coach since 2019, handling pitch design, development, and programming for the Tigers. Since his arrival Coach Wagner has been instrumental in the program's success and pitching improvement.

Wagner's pitching staff finished his first season with a 4.20 BB/9 rate, the program's best since 2012 (4.15 BB/9), all while impressively notching 230 strikeouts, which ranks fifth in program history. His pitchers also posted a 7.99 K/9, which is the program record for a single season.

In a 2020 season that was cut short after 10 games due to the pandemic, Wagner had his staff pitching at a prominent level, winning seven of those games while striking out more than eight batters per game. That season he also guided catcher turned pitcher Adam Mays into fourth in program history with saves. In 2021, Wagner saw his pitchers take aother leap in command, with a 3.31 BB/9, which is also a program record.

Before joining the Wittenberg staff, Wagner had stints as an assistant coach and Springfield Shawnee High School and as the head coach of Springfield Central Catholic. He is a 2001 graduate of Springfield North High School where he holds the single school record for strikeouts with 123 K’s in 55 IP. His senior year he received the State of Ohio Gatorade Player of The Year Award, the Mizuno Ohio All-State Player of The Year, and the OHSBCA Player of The Year.

Wagner moved on to Georgia Tech where he made an appearance on the mound in the College World Series in 2002 in Omaha, Nebraska. is 2004 season he was tabbed as the closer in which he had 19 appearances, 28.1 IP, 2.20 ERA, 14K, 3 SV. After his 2004 season, he was drafted in the 26th round of the MLB Draft by Tampa Bay. He spent 2 seasons in the minor leagues (Low A) where he appeared in 33 games with a 3-1 record and 3.41 ERA. In 2016, Coach Wagner was enshrined into the DABC Hall of Fame and the Springfield/Clark County Baseball Hall of Fame.

Wagner currently resides in his hometown of Springfield. His family owns the famous sandwich shop, Mike & Rosy’s Deli.
