Don McPherson, Social Justice Activist Through Sport, Set to Visit Wittenberg's Campus

 

  • While on Wittenberg’s campus this Wednesday and Thursday, Don will be visiting with many student and staff groups. Please consider taking time to visit with this empowering speaker and enthusiastic driver of equality.

WHO IS DON MCPHERSON?

  • For more than 27 years, Don McPherson has used the power and appeal of sport to address complex social justice issues. He has created innovative programs, supported community service providers and has provided educational seminars and lectures throughout North America. As an athlete, McPherson was a unanimous All-America quarterback at Syracuse University and is a veteran of the NFL and Canadian Football League. 
  • As captain of the undefeated 1987 Syracuse football team, McPherson set 22 school records, led the nation in passing and won more than 18 national “player of the year” awards, including the Maxwell Award as the nation’s best player, the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and the inaugural Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.  He was second in the Heisman Trophy voting.  In 2008 McPherson was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.  In 2013 Syracuse University retired his #9 jersey. Only the fourth number (and one of five) to be retired in the history of the University’s storied football program.
  • He  has received several honors in recognition of his service, including the Frederick Douglas Men of Strength Award, given by Men Can Stop Rape, Champions for Change, presented by Lifetime Television, The Creative Vision for Women’s Justice, presented by the Pace University Women’s Justice Center, and a Leadership Award from the National Center for Victims of Crime.  Most recently Don received the George Arents Award, Syracuse University's highest alumni honor and “Letter Winner of Distinction”, the highest honor bestowed a former student-athlete.
  • Don McPherson has served as a board member, consultant and advisor for several national organizations including the Ms Foundation for Women and the National Football Foundation and the US National Committee for UN Women.  He currently serves on the board of the Arc of Onondaga Foundation.  McPherson recently joined the Advisory Board of the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities, at Stony Brook University.

 Wednesday:

  • 10:00AM-Noon in Shouvlin 201 - “Recruiting and Retaining Minority Athletes in Today’s Climate”
  • Noon-1:00PM, Alumni Room – Lunch meeting with Minority Students
  • 2:00-4:00PM in Dr. Gary’s office – Don will be available for anyone interested in specific questions or one-on-one time
  • 4:00-6:00PM: Open session with campus leaders (from student orgs, SAAC, etc) in the Alumni Room, Student Center.
  • 8:00-9:00PM in Pam Evans Smith Arena – open to all female students – Group Presentation, “Netflix & Chill"
  • 9:15-10:15pm in Pam Evans Smith Arena – open to all male students – Group Presentation, “Netflix & Chill”
    • “Netflix & Chill” will focus on how we address, in an open and honest way, issues of sex, sexual assault, and what it means to be defined as a “real” man or women in today’s society.

Thursday:

  • 9:30-11:00AM - Visit with Gary Williams’ "Sport Soc and Psych" class
  • 12:40-2:10PM – Visit with Sarah Jurewicz’s "History of Women in Sport” class
