Meyer Named CWPA Div. III SID of the Year

Wittenberg University's AJ Meyer was named the 2019-20 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Division III Sports Information Director of the Year, it was announced be the association on June 21st.

Selected by the CWPA Director of Communications, the SID of the Year award is presented to individuals who “have achieved notable excellence in the field of water polo communications during the past academic year.”

He promoted the Tigers’ women’s water polo team during a 2020 season in which Wittenberg finished 5-9 prior to the outbreak of COVID-19.

A December 2015 graduate of Wittenberg with a self-designed bachelor’s degree in Sports Information, Meyer worked as an intern in his alma mater’s Sports Information Office from October 2014-to-December 2015 gaining a multitude of experience in the field from video production to stats, story coverage and everything in between.  He also broadcasted games through Title Integrated Media Corps in Springfield, Ohio for August-to-December 2015.

He acquired his first full-time SID position in February 2016 as Director of Athletic Communications at Division II University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Pa., where served as point of contact for all Devils’ varsity athletic programs as well as the Student Athlete Advisory Committee advisor.   

In August 2017, he returned to Wittenberg as an Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant and held the job until being promoted to Interim Director of Athletic Communications in August 2018 and Director of Athletic Communications in September 2019.  

In addition to water polo, he serves as the primary contact for field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, cross country, women’s basketball, men’s volleyball, track & field, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, women’s lacrosse and baseball for Wittenberg. 

He completed a Masters of Arts in May 2019.

The award marks the 10th Women’s Division III SID of the Year award presented by the league office.  Former Washington & Jefferson College Sports Information Director and current Director of Athletics Scott McGuinness claimed accolades during the 2010-11 and 2013-14 academic years, Grove City College SID Ryan Briggs took back-to-back honors in 2011-12 and 2012-13 prior to former W&J SID Sean King three-peating with laurels in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17.  Macalester College’s Matt McLagan became the first SID from outside Pennsylvania by taking the 2017-18 award prior to Austin College’s Jeff Kelly earning notice in 2018-19.
