Witt Athletics Competes In Inaugural Social Media Tiger Up Classic

Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg University Football and Women's Soccer teams claimed the top prize in their respective genders in the inaugural #TigerUp Classic, conducted via the Wittenberg University Athletic Department Twitter platform over the past three weeks.

It was an exciting few weeks of matchups aimed at seeing which Tiger team could garner the most social media support in order to advance to the following round. Appearing in the inaugural #TigerUp Classic Championship round, was a men's matchup between Wittenberg football and baseball, while the women's final round matchup was a battle between women's basketball and women's soccer.

Wittenberg football rallied late in the day of the 24-hour social media campaign against the baseball squad. The football community helped overcome a 6% deficit in the voting with less than 12 hours to go, helping the football Tigers take the crown. Women's soccer garnered support far and wide, jumping out to an early lead as the voting opened and ultimately fending off a late push by women's basketball to earn the inaugural title.

This competition was used as a way provide every program across Wittenberg athletics the opportunity to engage with their fanbases across the country. From the first round to the final round, the #TigerUp Classic generated over 300K unique impressions, adding over 100 new followers to the Wittenberg Athletics Twitter account, while increasing profile traffic by over 43 percent.

In the first round, teams competed for "Likes" and "Retweets" for votes with women's soccer securing the most votes with 177 likes. Women's volleyball saw a good show of support in their first-round matchup, gathering 145 total likes.

The Wittenberg support continued into Round Two, as both matchups featuring football (380) and women's soccer (339) garnered the most votes.

The final four matchup between women's volleyball and soccer saw the most votes of the Final Four polls with 616 votes.

On the final day of competition, the Wittenberg faithful cast over 1,400 votes between the two matchups as Football and Women's Soccer were ultimately crowned as champions.

The Wittenberg Athletic Department would like to thank all of those that participated in the inaugural #TigerUp Classic over the past three weeks. Although we were forced to take our competitions to a virtual platform this spring, we look forward to seeing all of our fans back on campus next fall for what is sure to be an exciting year for Wittenberg Athletics.
