CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Even when resting a number of his top runners, head coach Craig Penney saw his women's cross country run to a strong sixth place finish at the nearby Friendship Invitational hosted by Cedarville University. Meanwhile, the men without all of their top runners to an 11th-place finish in a 20-team field.
Samantha Iden (Pickerington, Ohio/North) paced the Tiger women with a time of 20:35 over the 5,000 meter course to claim a 26th place finish overall. Senior Kate McIlvain (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) crossed shortly thereafter, taking 32nd in a time of 20:55. A duo of freshmen, Emma Crosby (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and Samantha Swanton (Saginaw, Mich./Douglas MacArthur)took 49th and 52nd respectively. The women totaled 184 points to take third place among NCAA Division III teams.
On the men's side, Andrew Carter (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) took the top Tiger honor, with a 56th place finish on the 8,000-meter course in a time of 28:23. Sophomore Daniel Whonsetler (Prospect, Ky./Sacred Heart) finished four spots back in a time of 28:27 in a deep field of almost 200 competitors. Senior Mike Maneage (Bedford, Ohio/Chanel) also finished under 29 minutes, taking 78th to help the Tigers to 291 points on the morning.
The Tigers head out to Westerville, Ohio next Saturday, Sept. 27 for the Otterbein Invitational, the site of the 2008 Great Lakes Regional Meet.
