Wittenberg Improves To 2-0 At Waynesburg Tournament With 3-0 Win Over Defiance

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The Wittenberg Tigers may be ranked among the best in the nation again in 2005, but they are still are very young team overall and Head Coach Paco Labrador has the players on guard for a letdown. Mission accomplished Friday as the Tigers took the measure of Gallaudet and then Defiance by matching 3-0 margins to finish Day 1 of the Waynesburg Tournament with a 2-0 record.

The Tigers struggled a bit against a quality opponent in Defiance, pulling out a 33-31, 30-28, 30-14 victory. The win improved the third-ranked Tigers to 11-2 overall.

Wittenberg was paced offensively by sophomore setter Sarah Matesich with 29 assists and a trio of outside hitters, sophomore Jan Kehres with 11 kills, freshman Jackie Williams with nine kills and sophomore Emily Bell with eight kills. Defensively, freshman Laura Fender was stellar with 25 digs.
