Tigers Crush Calvin To Go 2-0 On First Day of Border Battle

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers don't lose often on their home court - just three defeats in three years have come in the HPER Center - and the latest to find out why the hard way was Calvin College. The Tigers improved to 2-0 on the first day of the first annual Border Battle with a 3-0 sweep of Calvin.

The Tigers improved to 6-2 overall on the young season with the win, which came on the heels of an equally impressive 3-0 sweep of Alma earlier in the day. Calvin was beaten earlier in the day by nationally ranked Mount St. Joseph, 3-0.

Defense was the key for Wittenberg as three players reached the 20-dig plateau. Sophomore Jan Kehres finished with 25, sophomore Emily Bell added 21 and freshman libero Laura Fender contributed 23 - to go along with a team-high four aces.

Offensively, Kehres was the top performer for Wittenberg with 14 kills, followed by Bell and freshman Jackie Williams, both of whom finished with eight kills. Sophomore Sarah Matesich dished out 39 assists.
