HAYWARD, Calif. - In their biggest test of the weekend, the Wittenberg Tigers came through with flying colors, defeating host California State-East Bay in the final match of the first day of the Pioneer Wild West Tournament.
Not only did Wittenberg defeat the perennial powerhouse Pioneers, who started out the season ranked in the top 25 but who are now 18-9, the Tigers did with a three-game sweep. Coming just hours after the Tigers opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Coe College, Wittenberg improved to 20-4 overall on the 2005 season.
Hitting percentages pretty much told the story in this match, as Wittenberg banged home 49 kills in 109 attempts and finished with a solid .269 attack percentage. Cal State-East Bay, on the other hand, had 32 kills and 23 errors in 103 attempts for an attack percentage below .100.
Offensively, the story for Wittenberg was freshman Jackie Williams, who continues to become more and more involved. Williams finished with a match-high 11 kills in just 14 attempts. Along with two errors, Williams finished with a tremendous individual attack percentage of .643.
As usual, Wittenberg spread the offensive wealth around as sophomore outside hitter Jan Kehres added 10 kills and sophomore outside hitter Emily Bell and senior outside hitter Linda Young each finished with nine kills. Defensively, three Tigers reached double figures in digs, led by Bell's 19, and the team recorded a whopping 15 blocks. Individually, sophomore middle hitter Caitlin Augustus was the leader with seven blocks, including three solos.
