COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Wittenberg men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2007 season with a sixth-place finish for the women and an eighth-place finish for the men at the Capital University Purple and White Invitational.
The Tiger women scored 27 points, thanks to strong performances from junior Nicole Bailey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) and sophomore Katie Shoemaker (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe). Bailey was the top finisher in the 55 meter dash qualifying races, although she did not score points in the final race. She did, however, come back strong to win the long jump with a mark of 16 feet-7 inches.
Shoemaker picked up right where she left off a year ago, turning in a second-place finish in the 300 meter dash and a third in the 500 meters.
On the men's side, the Tigers scored 43 points. The top individual finish was supplied by sophomore Gabe Savage (Lewisburg, Ohio/Tri-County North), who placed third in the 1000 meters. Also of note was the performance of senior Glenn Taylor (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg), who finished fifth in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump.
Wittenberg returns to action Saturday, Jan. 20, at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
