SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg swimming & diving teams came out swinging in a showdown with the North Coast Athletic Conference's other Tigers, but lost in both the men's and women's dual meets to DePauw despite a stellar all-around effort.
After the last event, Wittenberg's women fell by a score of 168-120 in their first dual meet loss of the season, while the men fell by a score of 187-99.
Headlining the effort were the record-breaking performances of freshman women's diver Emily Allen (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff). She broke the HPER Center Natatorium records in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, scoring a 236.35 from the short board to break a 2006 six-dive record of 235.40 held by Wright State's Crystal Grinstead, and a 244.40 on the high board to break the previous six-dive mark of 243.90, also held by Grinstead.
The women also posted some impressive finishes in the races, led by the 200-yard medley relay team's first-place showing thanks to senior Sarah Wilson (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe), sophomore Madeline Kraft (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth), freshman Amy Schulz (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) and sophomore Dani Lacy (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Collegiate School), who touched the wall in 1:53.00.
Senior Brooke Strumbel (North Royalton, Ohio/Hawken) contributed a win in the 200-yard freestyle before Kraft added a 1:08.95 victory in the 100-yard breaststroke.
For the men, junior James Dumstorf (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) posted the first victory in the lanes with a 59.47 time in the 100-yard breaststroke. He went on to win the 200-yard version on a time of 2:09.55.
On the boards, junior Eric Roberts (Willits, Calif./Willits) won the 3-meter diving event but had sophomore teammate Kevin Duhl (Westerville, Ohio/North) on his heels, and the roles reversed for the 1-meter dive. Roberts took the 3-meter event with a score of 250.40, just ahead of Duhl's 240.15, and finished just behind Duhl's 229.95 with a 223.10 from the 1-meter board.
Wittenberg is back in action on Saturday with a double-dual meet hosting Transylvania and Wilmington at 1 p.m. in the HPER Center Natatorium.
