
WOOSTER, Ohio - The Wittenberg swimming and diving teams opened the 2012-13 dual meet season in style with a pair of victories over host North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Wooster.
The Tiger men earned a 126.5-110.5 decision, while the Tiger women were victors by a 126-104 margin. The wins gave the Tigers plenty of momentum heading into a busy second weekend of the season that starts with a home date against Ohio Wesleyan on Friday, Nov. 2, and ends with a road trip to perennial powerhouse DePauw on Saturday, Nov. 3.
On the women's side, the Tigers opened with a big win in the 200-yard medley relay from junior Sarah Wilson (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe), junior Molly Gustafson (West Hartford, Conn./Conard), senior Jane Tsivitse (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) and senior Ward McNulty (Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) and never looked back, adding seven more individual victories.
Senior Claire Shannon (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) took first in the 1000-yard freestyle, Tsivitse won the 200-yard Individual Medley, Wilson touched first in the 100-yard backstroke, freshman Margaret White (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) took the honors in the 500-yard freestyle, Gustafson claimed the 100-yard breaststroke and senior Katie Reed (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) topped the standings in both diving events.
The men were kickstarted by sophomore Ed Young (Shaker Heights, Ohio/University School) with first place finishes in the 1000-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. He was followed into the winner's circle by sophomore AJ Burt (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.
Also of note were the diving scores posted by the tandem of freshman Kevin Duhl (Westerville, Ohio/North), who finished first in the 1-meter and second in the 3-meter, and sophomore Eric Roberts (Willits, Calif./Willits), who was first in the 3-meter and second in the 1-meter, and a clutch swim by sophomore Jared Crum (Galveston, Ind./Lewis Cass) in the third leg of the meet-ending 200-yard freestyle relay. He turned in the fastest time for the Tigers of 21.82 to help Wittenberg place second and secure the team win.
