OBERLIN, Ohio - The Wittenberg women's soccer team rebounded from a loss last week at Denison in a big way with a 3-0 road shutout of the Oberlin Yeowomen. After getting ahead 1-0 in the first half, the Tigers sealed the victory with two more in the second period to move to 3-1-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference and 11-3-1 overall.

In line with an increased focus on offense this season, head coach Norm Riker pulled the defense forward for a corner kick near the 12 minute mark. The gamble paid off, as the corner led to a loose ball in front of the goal, and senior defender Maggie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy) landed a header into the net to move ahead 1-0.

The game became a standoff for the rest of the first half, though the Tigers outshot Oberlin 12-5 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks throughout the period.

Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Gartner (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) made two stops in the period, and repeated with two in the second period in addition to help from one team save among six Oberlin shots. The Tigers leveled nine shots of their own in the concluding half, two leading to goals.

The first came 13 minutes into the period as sophomore Kelly Brothers (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) stuffed a ball from junior forward Sheryl Chambers (Victorville, Calif./St. Joan of Arc) into the net.

Wittenberg achieved the final margin on an unassisted goal in the 81st minute from sophomore team scoring leader Kailey Striebel (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont), her seventh of the season.

The Tigers return home to continue their North Coast Athletic Conference run with a 7 p.m. match versus Kenyon at Edwards-Maurer Field on Tuesday, Oct. 19.
