Wittenberg Defeats Ohio Northern on Late Goal

ADA, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers won the kind of game on Saturday that for the last two years has simply eluded them time and again.

In the first round of the Ohio Northern Invitational, Wittenberg freshman Amanda Farrell took a point-blank shot that was deflected by a Northern defender at the 88:48 mark of the second half. Tigers freshman Abby Vanderbosch was in the right place at the right time as she sent the rebound into the back of the net for the game-winner.

The Tigers had many other scoring opportunities in the game as they peppered the Ohio Northern goal with 22 shots, compared with seven for the Polar Bears, who dropped their season opener. Wittenberg improved to 2-0 on the young season. The closest call came when Wittenberg senior Rachel Ridgeway sent in a high shot from 25 yards out that bounced over the ONU goalkeeper's head and nearly went in.

Freshman goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke had two saves for the Tigers, compared to eight for her ONU counterpart. It was O'Rourke's second win in goal, and her first collegiate shutout.
