Fast start propels Women's Lacrosse to 15-7 win at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. — The Wittenberg women's lacrosse team scored six first-quarter goals en route to a 15-7 win at Averett on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers are 3-0 for the first time since 2017, when they started the year at 4-0.

The Basics

Stat Leaders

  • Senior Jessica Flick (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) led the Tigers with seven points on five goals and two assists. She leads the team with 12 goals on the season.
  • Junior Grace Hehman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) also scored five goals.
  • Sophomore Anna Roller (New Albany, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) added five points on three goals and two assists. She leads the team with six assists and 17 points on the season.
  • Sophomores Alyssa Burnside (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) and Maren Raymond (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) scored one goal each, and freshman Essence Wyse (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) tallied one assist.
  • Senior Zoe Chirumbolo McKee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) led the Tigers with five ground balls and seven caused turnovers.
  • Junior Gabrielle Weckerly (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) improved to 3-0 in goal, recording five saves in 30 minutes of action. Junior Sidney Sheridan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) played the remaining 30 minutes and recorded one save.
  • Faith Bowlin led Averett led Averett with two goals.

The Game

  • Averett opened the scoring just 57 seconds into the game, but the Tigers responded with a 6-0 scoring run to end the quarter. That spurt included three goals from Flick, two from Roller and one from Burnside.
  • Averett scored the lone goal of the second quarter, and Wittenberg took a 6-2 lead into halftime.
  • Raymond scored with 12:24 left in the third quarter to put Wittenberg up 7-2, but Averett responded with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to three, 7-4, with 5:40 left.
  • The Tigers tallied three unanswered goals courtesy of Hehman over the final 2:20 of the third period to take a 10-4 lead into the fourth.
  • Averett scored early in the final quarter, but Wittenberg answered with a 4-0 run on two goals from Flick and one each from Roller and Hehman for a 14-5 lead with 7:17 remaining.
  • Hehman scored her fifth goal in between a pair of Averett scores for the final 15-7 margin.
  • Wittenberg finished with a 21-12 edge in ground balls and 30-18 advantage in shots while forcing 25 Averett turnovers.

  • This marked the first all-time meeting between Wittenberg and Averett.
  • Flick has 114 career points on 98 goals and 16 assists. She is 22 goals and 38 points shy of entering the program's all-time top 10 list in those categories.
  • Hehman has 64 career points on 58 goals and six assists.
  • Sheridan has 227 career saves, which is 24 shy of joining the program's all-time top 10 list in that category. Weckerly has 153 career saves.
