A sports pioneer at Wittenberg University, Pat Clouse is at it again as the first head coach of women's golf since it re-emerged as a varsity sport in 2003. She led the program until her retirement in 2007.
Clouse helped bring women's golf back to Wittenberg's campus as a club sport in 2001, serving as the faculty adviser until it was granted varsity sport status in 2003. No stranger to the local golf scene, Clouse has attended golf certification programs and workshops on rules, instructional techniques and swing analysis. She has taught beginning golf classes for many years on Wittenberg's campus. An avid recreational golfer, Clouse's home course is Northwood Hills Golf Course in Springfield, where she has won numerous team and individual events and competitions.
In 2003-04, the team made great strides, and most of the players saw their scores drop significantly. The team's best finish was at the Wittenberg Invitational at Windy Knoll Golf Club in Springfield, in which the Tigers placed fourth against a solid field.
A member of Wittenberg's faculty since 1968, Clouse, an associate professor and former chair of the Health, Fitness and Sport Department, is a Certified Health Education Specialist. She has taught a wide range of health-related academic courses and activity-related courses at Wittenberg.
Clouse started the Tiger women's swimming and diving team in 1970 and served as head coach for 23 years, and she also coached the women's lacrosse team for 14 years, starting in its first official season in 1972. In swimming, Clouse's teams never had a losing dual meet record. Four individuals posted All-America finishes during Clouse's career, including Wittenberg Athletics Hall of Honor member Brenda Shaw (DeWitt), who was a six-time All-American and still holds three school records.
A 1964 graduate of Wittenberg with a degree in health and physical education, Clouse taught three years at Tecumseh High School in nearby New Carlisle, Ohio. Clouse is a native of Aurora, Ohio, and a former multi-sport athlete at Aurora High School. She was inducted into the Aurora High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992, the first female to be so honored in that school's history. At Wittenberg, Clouse was a member of the field hockey, volleyball, basketball and softball teams during her undergraduate years.
Clouse and her husband, Dick, reside in South Vienna, Ohio, with their two dachshunds, Gretchen and Schultz.
