Tiger Women's Golf Takes Third Place at JCU Donald Ross Invite

CLEVELAND, OH - Wittenberg's golf teams competed in the John Carroll University Donald Ross Invite Shaker Heights Country Club and Manakiki Golf Course in Cleveland, Ohio, Sept. 15-16. The women's team placed third out of nine teams with a two-round total of 666, just 12 strokes off the lead set by Ohio Northern at 654 and two strokes from second-place finishers Mount Union at 664.

A pair of juniors led the Tigers in scoring. Hillary Humbaugh (Haubstadt, IN/Gibson Southern) carded a 78 on day one, while Izzy Selby (Cincinnati, OH/Seton) led the team on day two with an 81.  However, senior Halley McNair (Cincinnati, OH/Bishop Fenwick) turned in the best two-day total for the Tigers placing 6th overall with a score of 164. Selby tied for 7th with a 166, freshman Addie Yarbrough (Dublin, OH/Jerome) tied for 9th with a 167, Humbaugh tied for 14th with a 171, and freshman Anna Sinclair (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) was 21st with a 177.

On the men's side, the Tigers' B team finished fourth out of nine teams with a two-day score of 617, 19 strokes off the pace set by John Carroll, which carded a two-day total of 598. Otterbein was second at 611 and John Carroll's B team was third at 614.

The Tigers set the course on fire during day one, taking the first-round lead to the clubhouse with a 294 behind the strong performances of freshman Bradley Hinkel (Springboro, OH/Springboro), who shot a 1-under-par 69, followed by sophomore Owen Williams (Plymouth, MI/ Detroit Catholic Central) with a 1-over-par 71. However, the Tigers struggled the second day with a 323 in round two on Monday. John Carroll turned in the low round of the second day, carding a 300.

Freshmen Jay McCuen (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) and Griffin Turner (Enon, OH/Greenon) led the team on day two, both carding an 80. Hinkel finished 7th overall with a 151 two-day total. Williams followed close behind in a tie for 8th place with a 152. Turner finished in a tie for 15th at 156, McCuen tied for 20th at 158, and junior David Walterhouse (Statham, GA/Bethlehem Christian Academy) came in with a 168 two-day total.

Next up, the Tigers will travel to Meadville, PA, for the Kuhn Invitational, hosted by Allegheny at The Country Club on Sept. 22-23.
