WOOSTER, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers put together a pair of strong rounds in the first-ever North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship Series event, finishing second in a six-team field at soggy Wooster Country Club.
The Tigers, ranked 20th in the latest Golf World NCAA Division III poll, carded a two-round total of 720, which put them 50 strokes behind 11th-ranked Allegheny. The host Scots are third in the standings, although they finished more than 100 strokes behind the Tigers on the par-72, 5,815-yard course.
The six teams return to action April 30-May 1 in the second round of the NCAC Championship Series. Hiram will host the event at Fowler's Mill Golf Club in Chesterland, Ohio.
Individually, the Tigers were led by freshman Deanna Michalishyn (Mason, Ohio/Mason) with a two-round total of 176, good for a tie for fifth place. She was followed by a pack of Tigers in 10th through 13th place, led by freshman Mary Eighmy (Erie, Pa./McDowell) in 10th with matching rounds of 90.
Junior Nicole Momsen (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula) was next in 11th with a score of 183 and freshman Jenna Gentner (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) rounded out the Tigers' top four with a 184, good for 12th place. Junior Carrie Frey (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) carded a 90 in the opening round to help the team score and she went on to finish 13th with a two-day total of 187.
