The Wittenberg men's and women's golf teams got off to solid
starts to the 2004 spring season last weekend. The men finished
seventh in the loaded 13-team field at the Muskingum Spring
Invitational and the women were fifth in a strong five-team
Wilmington Spring Invitational field.
All five men's players finished within two strokes of one another.
Junior Andy Bonar (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) and
freshman Scott Aker (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee)
led the way with matching 154s in the two-day event. That was good
for a 28th-place tie. Senior Adam Knowlton (Springfield,
Ohio/Shawnee) and sophomore Clinton Anderson
(Mechanicsburg, Ohio/Mechanicsburg) added matching 155s,
good for a 32nd-place tie, and sophomore Kristopher
Schmelzer (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) tied for 39th place
with a 156.
As a team, Wittenberg finished with a 611 in the two-event, 11
strokes out of the upper half of the tournament's finishers. The
team's second-day total of 298 was fifth-best, led by Anderson's
blistering one-over-par 71.
On the women's side, the top three Tiger golfers all broke into the
top 20, led by senior Erin Mowrey (Sylvania, Ohio/Toledo
St. Ursula), who posted a 95 in the one-day event. That
was good for a seventh-place finish. In addition, sophomore
Ann Delaney (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove)
carded a 104, good for 19th place. Freshman Erica Bodnar
(Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) finished with 108, good
for 20th.
As a team, the Tigers finished with a 417, just six strokes back of
Muskingum.
This week, the men are at the Kenyon Cup at Apple Valley Golf
Course and the women are at the Capital Invitational. Both are
two-day events.
