BOWLING GREEN, OH - Wittenberg Women's Basketball opened its 2024-25 slate on the road at Bowling Green with an unusual Tuesday morning tip-off time. Serving as an exhibition contest for the Tigers and Kids Day for the host Falcons, Wittenberg was defeated 102-47 by Bowling Green, an NCAA Division I scholarship program that finished with a 16-15 record in the Mid-American Conference last year.
The Tigers played the Falcons tough in the first quarter, trailing by a score of 25-13 heading into the second. After two back-to-back baskets by Bowling Green, Kelsey Ragan (Whitehouse, OH/Anthony Wayne) narrowed Wittenberg's deficit back to 14 with a made three-pointer, and Karsen Karlblom (Crystal Lake, IL/Prairie Ridge) later got in on the second quarter action as she scored five points off two layups and a free throw. The Falcons expanded their lead to 18 points heading into the break, however.
A series of turnovers and fouls by Wittenberg made for a challenging start to the third quarter as BGSU went on an 10-2 run to extend its lead to 30 as the Falcons outscored Wittenberg 29-12 in the period. Senior Jazmyn Gaines-Burns (Bladensburg, MD/Elizabeth Seton) led the way for Witt in the third, totaling five points and one assist.
Molly Mossing (Cedarville, OH/Cedarville), Madi Barnett (Cincinnati, OH/Kings), and Payton Cronen (Louisville, KY/Assumption) all contributed offensively for Wittenberg in the fourth period, but the deficit proved to be too steep and Wittenberg suffered the preseason loss. For the game, Karlblom paced the Tigers with nine points, while Ragan scored eight and Gaines-Burns tallied five. Mossing had a team-high five rebounds and McKenna Baker (Brownsburg, IN/Bethesda Christian) recorded three steals.
The Tigers officially kick off their regular season on Friday, November 8, as they travel to Ohio Northern for a 7 p.m. tip.
