Granville, OH – The Wittenberg women's basketball team got back in the gym, opening up North Coast Athletic Conference action with a trip to Denison University on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers dropped the hard-fought road battle to the Big Red 70-65, as Korynne Berner and Kristie Kalis led the scoring effort for Wittenberg finishing with double figures. Berner led the Tigers both in scoring and rebounding on the day, finishing with 16 points knocking down 7 of 12 from the floor, while pulling down eight rebounds. Kalis converted on 6 of 8 attempts from the floor, knocking down 2 of 3 looks from beyond the arc, adding three rebounds, three assists, and two steals to her total on the day. Wittenberg knocked down 43 percent from the floor on the day as a team, while converting on 6 of 8 attempts from the free-throw line.
Game Breakdown
The Big Red would take the opening points of the game, forcing Wittenberg to fight back from the early going, bringing the score to within three with just over six minutes to go in the quarter. Delaney Williams tallied six of her total seven points in the first quarter for Wittenberg, adding two rebounds, an assist, and a steal to start the game. Wittenberg kept the fight going in the second quarter, as Denison maintained a 38-31 lead at the break. Abigail Yunker and Riley Culver combined for 9 of the 14 second quarter Wittenberg points. After scoring just two points in the first half, Kalis came alive in the third quarter, posting seven points and converting on all three of her attempts from the field. Wittenberg put everything together in the fourth quarter, shooting 57 percent from the field and out-rebound the Big Red 7-3.
