Oberlin, Ohio – The Wittenberg women's basketball team took their final road trip of the regular season, falling to the Yeowomen of Oberlin College 60-53. Wittenberg was led by freshman Delaney Williams, scoring nine of her 14 points in the first half. The Tigers finished with three scoring in double figures on the afternoon, as Williams led the offensive effort. Senior Haley Dannemiller and junior Alex Kiess each added 10 points for the Tigers.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Tigers would spread the ball in the first quarter, with Kristie Kalis scoring five points in the first ten minutes. The freshman forward would finish with eight points, three rebounds, and two steals. Williams tallied seven points going into the break and five points coming out of the half for a combined five of eight from the field through the two quarters. This would be the spark Wittenberg would need to gain their first lead over the Yeowomen in the third quarter. Dannemiller pulled down three of her six rebounds in the second quarter adding two points, with Korynne Berner reeling in three rebounds before the break. Dannemiller would finish by adding two assists, two steals, and a block. Kiess recorded eight of her ten total points in the second half. Hannah Weaver tallied four assists and five rebounds and added a steal in 25 minutes of action.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Wittenberg shot 36% from the field on the afternoon. With just two trips to the free-throw line, the Tigers converted on three of four attempts from the charity stripe. Wittenberg scored 17 points off 14 Oberlin turnovers. The Tigers scored 18 points in the paint on the afternoon, pulling down 35 rebounds on the day.
FROM THE BENCH: "We fell short today against a very good team. We need to make sure we are learning from playing in this tight game because it will happen again before the end of the season," said head coach Kelly Mahlum, "Alex Kiess did an exceptional job on defense as did Haley Dannemiller. They played well on both ends of the floor."
