Wittenberg Women's Hoops Hangs On At Hiram

Hiram, Ohio – The Wittenberg women's basketball held on for a 66-64 win on the road over the Terriers of Hiram College on Saturday afternoon. For the second straight game, Wittenberg has finished with four players scoring in double figures. Freshman Kristie Kalis posted her third straight double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. The Tigers were aggressive on all ends of the floor, as Haley Dannemiller finished with 10 rebounds of her own on the day. Wittenberg picks up a big win over Hiram, improving to 12-10 on the season and 7-6 in NCAC action. With this win, the Tigers move into the fourth spot ahead of the Terriers.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Tigers were knotted up with the Terriers at 35-35 through the first half. Sydney Mayle was the first in double-digits, scoring 11 of her 13 points in the first 20 minutes of action. Mayle would finish the game converting on 5 of 10 attempts from the floor, pulling down six rebounds, dishing out three assists and coming up with a steal. The scales weren't tilting either way after the intermission with each side matching the other with 15 points apiece after the third quarter. Delaney Williams and Alex Kiess provided four points each coming out of the break, with Williams adding two assists and two steals to the effort. The Wittenberg bench would come through in the fourth quarter, with Amanda Raber stepping on the floor to score 6 of her 11 points in the final 10 minutes of action. Kalis tallied 8 of her 10 rebounds in the second half.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Wittenberg was able to shoot 34% from the field, converting on 78% of their free-throw attempts. The battle inside was won by the Tigers, as Wittenberg scored 32 points in the paint to Hiram's 10. Wittenberg had great help off the bench with 28 points coming from Tiger reserves.

 

FROM THE BENCH: "Our players did a great job coming away from this weekend 2-0 on the road. We will celebrate these wins and then get back to work on Monday," said head coach Kelly Mahlum. 

 

UP NEXT: Wittenberg will return to action next Saturday, February 10 when they travel to Oberlin to battle the Yeowomen. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
