SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg women's basketball team was decked out in pink in honor of former head coach Pam Evans Smith, who lost her battle with cancer in 2007, and all those lost to the the disease. The old coach surely is smiling after the Tigers turned in one of their finest performances of the 2013-14 season in a 93-54 victory over visiting Hiram.
The Tigers broke open a close game with a 12-4 run midway through the first half and never looked back. The lead was 39-24 at halftime, and it reached as high as 42 points in the second half as 17 Wittenberg players saw action and 15 of them found their way into the scoring column in the final box score.
The win snapped a two-game slide for the Tigers, who improved to 11-8 overall and 6-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) and remained in the hunt for a home game in the NCAC Tournament quarterfinals. Hiram lost for the second time in the 2013-14 season to Wittenberg and fell to 5-16 overall and 1-11 in the league.
Wittenberg hit 58.5 percent of its shots from the field in the game, the fourth-best performance in program history. The Tigers were successful on 31 of their 53 attempts, easily the team's best shooting of the season - the previous high-water mark came against Wooster (50.8).
It is hardly a coincidence that the Tigers also established a new season high for points with 93. The individual leader was senior Amber Rice (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) with 28 points in just 26 minutes of action. She drained 8-of-10 from the field, including all four from three-point range, and 8-of-9 from the free throw line to go along with four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Junior Heather Schroeder (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) also had a hot hand as she poured in 8-of-9 from the field and swished both free throws to tally 18 points. Junior Katelyn Haralamos (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) also finished in double figures offensively with 11 points, while freshman Michelle Brunswick (Middletown, Ohio/Madison) led both teams in rebounds with 10, in addition to two points, two blocked shots and two steals.
