CLERMONT, Fla. — The Wittenberg softball team closed its 10-game spring break trip Friday with an 11-0 win over Elms in five innings followed by an 11-3 loss to Alfred in Florida.
The Basics
- Records: Wittenberg (8-6 overall), Elms (1-7 overall), Alfred (5-5 overall)
- Venue: Legends Way Ballfields - Clermont, Fla.
- The Tigers posted a record of 6-4 in their 10-game spring break trip.
Stat Leaders - vs. Elms
- Freshman Rebekah Giel (Amelia, Ohio/West Clermont) had a team-best three hits for Wittenberg.
- Sophomore Meghan McCans (Arcanum, Ohio/Arcanum) and graduate student Samantha Casteel (Loveland, Ohio/Little Miami) tallied two hits each.
- Freshman Anna Engler (Kettering, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne) had a team-best three RBIs, and senior Hanna Ecker (Heath, Ohio/Heath) had two RBIs.
- Junior Samantha Zungri (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) had a triple for the Tigers' lone extra-base hit of the game.
- McCans recorded four stolen bases to go with two each from Giel, Casteel, senior Julia Burch (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) and sophomore Audrey Robinson (Sunbury, Ohio/Highland).
- Sophomore Lilly James (Troy, Ohio/Troy) got the pitching start for the Tigers and earned the win to improve to 4-1 on the season. She pitched three scoreless innings, allowing three hits while tallying three strikeouts.
- Sophomore Julia Hall (Powell, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) pitched the final two innings, giivng just one walk while striking out three.
Game 1 - Wittenberg 11, Elms 0
- Aided by Elms miscues, the Tigers scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the second for an early 5-0 lead.
- An RBI triple from Zungri and RBI sac fly from Engler increased the lead to 7-0.
- The Tigers capped the scoring with four runs in the top of the fourth.
- Hall pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth to end the game early via the mercy rule.
- Wittenberg out-hit Elms by a 10-3 margin and committed one error to Elms' four.
Stat Leaders - vs. Alfred
- Ecker led the Wittenberg offense with one hit and two RBIs.
- Freshman Caylee Roe (Piqua, Ohio/Piqua) added a double and one RBI.
- Freshman Syd Little (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) also had a double for the Tigers' other extra-base hit in the game.
- Senior Kira van Ravensberg (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) got the pitching start for the Tigers and was charged with the loss, dropping to 3-3 on the season. Hall and James pitched in relief.
- Abigail Gatza led the Alfred offense with three hits, including two doubles and a home run, and five RBIs.
- Meghan Bennett pitched all seven innings for Alfred and allowed five hits while tallying three strikeouts to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Game 2 - Alfred 11, Wittenberg 3
- The Saxons scored two runs in the top of the first inning and three more in the second for an early 5-0 lead.
- The Tigers got on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the third inning via a 2-RBI single from Ecker and an RBI double from Roe to get within two, 5-3.
- Gatza's two-run homer in the fourth increased the Saxons' lead to 7-3.
- Alfred added a run in the fifth inning and three more in the seventh to cap the scoring.
Records & Milestones
- This marked the first all-time meetings between Wittenberg and both Elms and Alfred.
- Burch has 123 hits and 28 steals in her career. She is tied for eighth all-time at Wittenberg in steals and is seven hits shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
- Ecker needs two hits to reach 100 for her career. She also has 60 RBIs in her career, which is 18 shy of joining the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
- McCans has 17 steals this season and 25 in her career. She ranks 10th all-time at Wittenberg on the single-season steal list and is tied for 10th on the program's all-time top 10 list for career steals.
- In the circle, van Ravensberg has 23 career wins, which ranks ninth in program history. She also has 97 career strikeouts, which is nine shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in that category.
