Tigers Sweep Battling Bishops In Rescheduled Series

Springfield, OH – Wittenberg softball resumed action with the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon, after their series on Friday, April 9 was suspended due to weather. Picking up the action in the top of the fourth inning, Wittenberg trailed the Bishops 3-1, the Tigers came out swinging posting four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take back the lead, taking the game by a final score of 6-4. Wittenberg secured the sweep with a game two win over the Battling Bishops at 7-3. The Tigers tallied 20 hits on the afternoon, with Elise Freeland, Julia Burch, and Elaina Adams logging multiple hits in game one. Burch kept it going in game two, going 3 for 3 with three runs scored. Clara Andersen, Hanna Ecker, and Briana Busic each posted multiple hits, with Ecker recording three RBIs in the second game. Katelyn Niswonger picked up wins seven and eight on the afternoon, tallying a total of seven strikeouts between two games.

Game Breakdown

Wittenberg bounced back in game one that was halted do to weather, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Megan Niswonger ignited the scoring rally with an RBI rally up the middle, cutting the OWU lead down to 3-2. A single by Freeland, brought things back to even as Niswonger scored the third Tiger run. Wittenberg took the lead off the single by Burch, as Ecker came home to score. Wittenberg capped off the scoring in game one with a single by Burch as Adams came home to score the final run.

The Tigers didn't slow down in game two, putting up three runs in the first and two runs in the second inning, holding a 5-1 advantage over the Battling Bishops. A two-RBI double by Ecker plated Andersen and Burch for the first two Wittenberg runs. Adams drove in Brooke Dill for the third Tiger run of the inning. A single to shortstop by Burch got the scoring started in the second inning for the Red and White. Ecker helped add to the Tiger lead with a shot to the left side, scoring Burch and extending the Wittenberg advantage to 5-1. Andersen dropped down the bunt single in the fourth to bring home the sixth Tiger run. Freeland brought home the final Tiger run, running out an RBI single to the left side in the bottom half of the fifth.

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, April 24, traveling to Ohio Wesleyan for a non-conference doubleheader with the Battling Bishops. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
