Tigers Split Road Series With Battling Bishops

Delaware, OH – The Wittenberg University softball team traveled to Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday evening to open up North Coast Athletic Conference action. The two sides battled it out through the first two games of this series, as the Tigers split the day with Bishops, taking game one in hard-fought fashion 9-7. Wittenberg dropped game two, falling to Ohio Wesleyan by a final score of 6-4. Wittenberg collected 16 hits in game one on their way to 20 hits on the afternoon.

Game Breakdown

Wittenberg captured the early lead in game one, starting with an RBI single through the left side by Clara Andersen, scoring Elise Freeland. Julia Burch would come around to score on the Ohio Wesleyan defensive miscue. Andersen helped add to the Tiger lead in the third inning, lacing a triple to left-center, bringing around Nikki Hawkins. Sam Lindsey extended the Wittenberg advantage with an RBI single down the line in left, scoring Megan Niswonger. Ohio Wesleyan put together a scoring rally in the third, knotting things up at 5-5. Hawkins put Wittenberg back on top with a single to center field, bringing home Freeland. The Battling Bishops saw their first lead of game one in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 7-6 advantage. Wittenberg responded in the fifth inning, adding three runs, starting with Elaina Adams executing the bunt to bring home Briana Busic. Another bunt single by the Tigers, this time coming from Alex Gibson put Wittenberg ahead 8-7. Hawkins logged the sacrifice fly, driving in the final Tiger run.

The back-and-forth battle continued in game two, with the Battling Bishops striking first taking an early 1-0 lead at the bottom of the first. A double by Burch in the gap in left put the Tigers on the board and knotted things up at 1-1. The Battling Bishops posted five runs between the fourth and sixth innings, taking a 6-1 advantage over the Tigers. Wittenberg ignited a spark in the top of the seventh with a three-RBI double to right-center coming from Freeland, as the Tigers fell short 6-4 as the final out was made.

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, April 10 for a home doubleheader with the Battling Bishops from Doughman-Dillahunt Field. First Pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
