Tigers Take Care Of Anderson With Two Game Sweep

Anderson, IN – The Wittenberg University softball team returned to action on Friday afternoon, sweeping the Ravens from Anderson University in the doubleheader matchup. The Tigers shutout Anderson in game one by a final score of 4-0. Wittenberg went on to take game two by a final score of 7-5.

Game Breakdown

The Tigers collected eight hits in the first game, with Alex Gibson starting her day going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Gibson, Julia Burch, and Hannah Weymouth each tallied a double for the Red and White. Wittenberg posted three runs in the second inning, starting with an RBI bunt single by Gibson, scoring Niki Hawkins. The Red and White took advantage of an Anderson error later in the inning, as Mary Britton dropped down the sacrifice bunt to bring home Clara Andersen. Elaina Adams drove in the final run of the inning, executing the sacrifice fly to bring home Gibson. Wittenberg posted their final run of the game, as Elise Freeland brought in Brooke Dill. Katelyn Niswonger earned her sixth win of the season, moving to 6-2, with seven innings pitched on the day. Niswonger allowed just three hits while fanning seven.

Andersen got the scoring started for the Tigers in game two, slapping a double to left field that brought home Gibson. Wittenberg fought off a tough Anderson squad in game two, as the home side regained the lead in the bottom half of the first inning. The Tigers regained the advantage in the top of the second with two runs, starting with a single by Burch. Another miscue by the Ravens led to a Tiger run, as Freeland crossed home for the second Tiger run of the inning. The Tiger offense erupted in the fourth inning, as Dill came across to score on the Anderson wild pitch to get the rally started. A single to left from Burch brought around Freeland for the second Tiger run of the inning. Another multi-base hit coming off the bat of Gibson, lacing a triple to center, brought home Burch. Hawkins capped off the scoring rally, lacing a single down the line in left to bring home the seventh and final Wittenberg run.

 

UP NEXT

Wittenberg will return to action on Tuesday, April 6 traveling to Ohio Wesleyan for a doubleheader with the Battling Bishops. First pitch is set for 3:30pm.
