Wittenberg Softball Splits Afternoon At MSJ

Cincinnati, OH – The Wittenberg University softball team returned to action on Saturday afternoon, taking a trip to Mount St. Joseph for a doubleheader with the Lions. The Tigers come off of two top 10 wins from a week ago at the Pioneer Classic, defeating the then No. 10 Transylvania and No. 7 DePauw. Wittenberg dropped the first game of the day, 3-1. The Red and White bounced back to take game two from the Lions by a final of 7-4. The Tigers tallied 16 hits on the afternoon, Alex Gibson finished the day 3 for 6 from the plate with three RBI's.

Game Breakdown

The Tiger offense came alive in game two, putting up six runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Megan Niswonger got the scoring started for the Tigers in the first inning, lacing a single to right field, bringing around Elise Freeland for the first Wittenberg run. A two-RBI double by Gibson in the gap in left extending the Tiger advantage out to 3-0. Hannah Ecker kept the rally going with an RBI single to left, bringing around Gibson. Mary Britton launched her first home run of the season, capping off the Wittenberg scoring. Wittenberg held off a late scoring push from MSJ in the fifth inning, before putting up two more runs in the sixth and extending their lead to 9-4. Kira Van Ravensberg picked up her third win of the season, moving to 3-1 after allowing eight hits on the day. Britton took the circle for three innings of work, striking out two and surrendering four hits.

UP NEXT

Wittenberg will return to action on Friday, April 2 traveling to Anderson University (Ind.) for a two-game slate with the Ravens. The first pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
