Tigers End 2020 Shortened Season With Win

Clermont, FL – The Wittenberg University softball team wrapped up the 2020 shortened season with a split of their final two games from the Sunshine state. Though the Tigers did not expect to get any North Coast Athletic Conference action in this season, a shuffled scheduled matched-up Wittenberg against NCAC foe Wooster in the first game of their final day of action. The Tigers dropped the hard-fought battle to the Scots 4-2 in the first game of the day, before bouncing back to bring home the final win of the season, taking down Bridgewater State University, 4-0. The Tigers tallied 19 hits between their final two games, as the afternoon was highlighted by seniors Briana Gibson and Victoria Toetz recording base knocks in their final at-bats in a Red and White jersey. Mary Britton picked up the win in the Tigers' final win of the season, to remain unbeaten, tossing a complete-game shutout, while striking out two and allowing eight hits.

Wooster Game Breakdown

The Scots posted their first run early, scoring in the bottom half of the first inning. Wittenberg was threatening in the second inning when the tying run crossed the plate, but runners were sent back on a stray ball coming into play from a parallel field. Wooster added to their lead with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. It was up to the Tigers to spark a rally in the seventh inning, as Elise Freeland smacked a single up the middle, bringing home Sydney Wade for the first Wittenberg run. With runners in scoring position, Gibson drove in the second Tiger run, bringing in Freeland with a grounder to the left side of the infield.

Bridgewater Game Breakdown

The Tigers extended their late-game rally from the first game, putting up runs in the first and second innings of game two. Leading off with a single up the middle, Freeland quickly swiped second and advanced to third on the sacrifice by Gibson. The Tigers took advantage of the Bridgewater miscue when Clara Andersen took second, Freeland took home for the first Wittenberg run. Britton gave herself some run support in the second inning, driving in Alex Gibson for the second Tiger run. Wittenberg continued to make the defense make plays, as Gibson reached on a fielding error by the Bears, scoring Elaina Adams for the third Tiger run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Adams came around to score once more in the bottom of the sixth, as Toetz smacked a single to right for one last career RBI.
