Tigers Take Two From Edison State

Springfield, Ohio – The Wittenberg University softball team got back on the winning track, taking two games from Edison State Community College on Thursday afternoon in their return home. The Tigers took game one 5-2, before completing the sweep with a 10-2 win in five innings in their return home. Senior Abby Curnutte fueled the Tiger offense with two home runs, finishing the day 3 for 4 from the dish with two walks and five RBI's. Between the two games on the day, Wittenberg held the Chargers scoreless through 8 of the 12 innings.

Game Breakdown

Curnutte tallied her first RBI of the day with a groundout in the first inning of game one to bring home Briana Gibson. A bunt single in the third inning by Lauren Buelow brought home Elise Freeland and put the Tigers back on top 2-1. The first Curnutte homer of the day was a two-run shot over the left field fence, which extended the Wittenberg advantage out to 4-1. Aubrie Stillings crossed for the final Wittenberg run in the sixth inning with some heads-up base running, scoring on the Edison State wild pitch. Mary Britton picked up her second win of the season, tossing all seven innings for the Red and White, allowing just seven hits and striking out five.

Wittenberg jumped out to an early lead in game two, going off for six runs in the second inning. Freeland led-off the Tiger scoring rally with a base-clearing three RBI double to center field. Megan Niswonger followed up with a single to right field to bring around Freeland. Curnutte capped off the Tiger scoring with her second homer of the day. Elaina Adams reached safely on the Edison State error in the third inning, while Missy Lee came home to score adding to the Wittenberg lead. Heading into the fifth inning with a five-run advantage, Lee drove in the first Wittenberg run with a single to right. Freeland logged her second extra-base hit of the game with a triple down the right-field line to score Lee. Niswonger got the final at-bat of the game, smacking a double back up the middle to bring in Freeland and seal the win. Katelyn Niswonger went the distance for Wittenberg, striking out eight with just six hits allowed.

Wittenberg will open up NCAC action on Sunday, Mar. 31 when they travel to Oberlin College. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
