CRESTVIEW HILLS, Kentucky—Wittenberg softball improved to 12-4 in 2017 with a split at non-conference Thomas More on Saturday. Wittenberg saw Chelsea Zang improve to 8-1 overall on the year in the 6-1 win in game one, while the Tigers dropped a tough 3-1 battle in game two. Zang and Abby Baker both recorded round-trippers in game one, while Wittenberg only managed to record three hits as a team in game two.
GAME ONE SCORING BREAKDOWN
Top 1st
- The Tigers broke the ice in the top of the first inning, as Casey Hobbs came racing home to score on a passed ball.
Top 2nd
- Katy Baumgartner laced a single back up the box for Wittenberg, plating freshman first basemen Wendy Hawk on the play.
Top 3rd
- With Hobbs already in scoring position, Zang made sure that both her and her second basemen scored, as the junior sent a ball over the fence for a two-run home-run, giving the Tigers a 4-1 lead.
Top 6th
- With a commanding lead already, Baker tacked on two insurance runs for the Tigers, sending a Thomas More offering over the fence for a two-run home-run, plating Savannah Taylor on the play.
GAME TWO SCORING BREAKDOWN
Top 5th
- Wittenberg strung together competitive at-bats all afternoon, but could not scratch a run across until the top of the fifth inning when Abby Curnutte scored freshman Olivia Hopkins on an RBI single.
KEY STATS
- At the plate, Wittenberg walked eight times as a team, and struck out 11, while the Saints walked once and struck out four times as a team.
- Thomas More played 14 innings of error-free softball on Saturday, while the Tigers committed two errors in the double-header.
