Tiger Softball Splits Opening NCAC Tilt at OWU

DELEWARE, Ohio—Wittenberg softball battled the elements to kick off NCAC play against Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday, as the game was previously scheduled to take place on Saturday. The Tigers fell to the Battling Bishops in game one 3-1, but were able to get even and take game two 4-2 from the home team. Abby Haab (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) hurled four strong innings on her way to yet another win, while Chelsea Zang (Cinncinnati, Ohio/Seton) earned a save in game two. The win moves the Tigers to a 17-4-1 mark in 2016, with a 1-1 mark in NCAC play.

GAME ONE NOTES

  • The Tigers managed to scratch across their only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning, when Kaela Hughes (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Watterson) touched home as the Bishops catcher mishandled the throw trying to cut her down at the plate.
  • Zang scattered seven hits, walked zero, and only allowed two earned-runs in her six innings of work as the sophomore moved to 9-3 on the year.
  • Hughes not only scored the Tigers lone run of the game, but the first-basemen also produced two of the team's seven hits.

GAME TWO NOTES

  • Wittenberg managed to get their bats going in game two, as the Tiger offense exploded for 12 hits in the 4-2 NCAC victory.
  • Right off the bat, the Tigers got on the board when Zang singled to right and Missy Lee (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) scored on a throwing error by OWU.
  • In the top of the fourth inning, Wittenberg stole two more runs from OWU as a Lauren Buelow (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) double plated Baker, followed by Lee swiping second base and Buelow stealing home.

KEY STATS

  • Baker, Loren Combs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), Hughes, and Lee all had three hits apiece in the Tigers NCAC split.
  • Wittenberg's five runs on the day came off of three different Tiger's bats, as Baker, Buelow and Zang all recorded RBI's.
  • Consistent with their 2016 campaign thus far, the Tigers swiped four more bases on Sunday to bring their season total to 46.

UP NEXT

  • The Tigers NCAC schedule continues Wednesday, April 6 against Kenyon. First pitch of the double-header is set for 3:30PM in Gambier, Ohio.
