MEADVILLE, Pa. – With their season on the line, the Wittenberg Tigers answered a most important gut check to salvage a doubleheader split with Allegheny.
After seeing a 3-1 lead evaporate in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2, Wittenberg answered with a two-out rally in the top of the seventh as a single to left field by junior Kaitie Harrison (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge) plated junior Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins). Freshman Kaela Hughes () then secured her first collegiate victory, capping off a complete game performance by holding the Gators scoreless in the bottom of the seventh.
The split moved the Tigers to 11-6 overall and 2-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), while Allegheny now stands at 11-13 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
The opener went to the Gators by a convincing 8-2 score as junior Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South) gave up season-highs of eight hits, four walks and seven earned runs. The game was just 2-1 in favor of Allegheny before the Gators broke things open with a six-spot in the fifth inning.
Rose scored two runs, while Ross recorded Wittenberg's lone RBI.
In the nightcap, Hughes scattered eight hits, but she did not walk a batter while allowing three earned runs. Harrison sparked the offense with two hits and two runs batted in, while freshman Aubrey Mendez (St. Louisville, Ohio/Utica) added an RBI double and also scored a run.
