Softball Picks Up Two Victories On Spring Break Day Two

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Wittenberg softball team picked up two wins and improved to 3-1 on day two of their spring break trip to the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a 10-5 win over WPI and an 8-0 victory over Regis.

The Tigers racked up 13 hits and drew five walks against Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and sophomore Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South) proved to be the impact player. Ross went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs and a walk in support of her own effort in the circle. She went the distance to earn the win, nearly matching WPI's nine hits with eight strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Tiger offense put up eight runs early in the game with four-run innings in the first and second. That was enough for the win, but the Tigers added two in the sixth for insurance.

Senior Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) drove in three runs on 2-for-5 hitting, followed by two RBIs on a 2-for-3 game by freshman Carly Cribbs (Rochester, Mich./Rochester). Senior Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier)rounded out the RBI column with one.

The Tigers again wasted no time in building a considerable lead in Game 2 versus Regis, striking for two runs in the first inning and six in the second, a rally sparked by an inside-the-park home run by Snyder.

Cribbs also accounted for two runs on 1-for-2 hitting, while the rest of the scoring came om a wild pitch and a Cribbs attempted stolen base that allowed Amicon to score from third in the first inning, followed by an error in the field during the second inning rally.

Freshman Julia Williams (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) pitched a gem to collect her first collegiate victory, allowing just one hit in five innings while striking out six and issuing no free passes.
