Tigers Prevail In Battle Of The 'Bergs

TIFFIN, Ohio — In a softball doubleheader pitting the two 'Bergs of Ohio against one another, it was the Tigers of Wittenberg that emerged victorious, claiming a sweep of Heidelberg with wins of 6-4 and 9-0.

Wittenberg improved to 13-7 overall while Heidelberg fell to 9-4 on the season.

Heidelberg built a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings of Game One, and held the Tigers scoreless through five. Wittenberg's offense broke through with two in the top of sixth to tie things up while freshman Julia Williams (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) held the Student Princes at bay from the circle in the bottom half.

Senior Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) then led off the seventh inning with a single and freshman Carly Cribbs (Rochester, Mich./Rochester) drove her around with a double to take the lead 3-2.

Sophomore Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins) followed with a single before senior Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) pushed Cribbs across with a single. Freshman Ashlee Wright (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) scored Rose with an RBI groundout and senior Fallon White (Fairborn, Ohio/Northmont) drove in Amicon with a single to complete a four-run outburst that Heidelberg's two runs could not answer in the bottom of the frame.

Williams picked up the win in seven innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on ten hits and two strikeouts.

In Game Two, the Tigers again got a strong outing from sophomore Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South), who tossed her third shutout and sixth complete game of the season in moving to 6-3. Heidelberg managed just six hits in the game, while Ross fanned three batters.

Cribbs led the team in the nightcap with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Snyder batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored and six other Tigers notched RBIs. They included Rose, Amicon, Wright, Ross, White and Williams.
