Tigers Split Pair With Haverford, Finlandia

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Wittenberg Tiger softball team rounded the halfway point of its 2012 Spring Break trip to Fort Myers, Fla., by splitting games against Haverford and Finlandia. After losing 5-1 to Haverford, the Tigers rallied in a big win to defeat Finlandia 11-1 in five innings.

The split left the Tigers at 6-2 on the season.

In the day's first game, defensive miscues opened for the door for Haverford. After the Tigers scored first on an RBI hit by sophomore Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins) that scored senior Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) in the first inning, Haverford struck for a pair of runs on an RBI double in the second inning and then took command of the game with three runs, including a pair unearned, in the third.

That put the game into the hands of Haverford's starting pitcher Brittany Stevenson, who allowed just five hits — all singles — and one walk in going the distance. She outdueled sophomore Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South), who struck out batters while allowing six hits and two walks in also registering a complete game.

Wittenberg bounced back in a big way against Finlandia a short time later. The offense got back on track right away, scoring two runs in the first inning, a Spring Break-high (tying) six runs in the second, and singles runs in the third and fourth before the game was stopped due to the run rule after the top of the fifth.

Freshman Carly Cribbs (Rochester, Mich./Rochester) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the offense, while Ross and senior Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) each drove in a pair of runs. Seniors Fallon White (Fairborn, Ohio/Northmont) and Brooklyn Cox (Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler) both scored two runs.

The offensive outburst backed the strong pitching of freshman Julia Williams (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South). She won her second collegiate game by allowing four hits and one unearned run in five strong innings.
