Tigers Round Out Best Spring Break Trip In More Than A Decade

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Wittenberg softball team put the finishing touches on a successful Spring Break trip with their fourth split in six game days. After losing their third one-run game of the week to Wheaton by a 2-1 count, the Tigers headed north with plenty of momentum after beating Newbury 9-1 in six innings.

The split left the Tigers with their best Spring Break record in more than a decade at 8-4.

That record would be even more impressive if the Tigers could have found a way to pull out three one-run losses, the last one coming against perennial Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin powerhouse Wheaton. Wittenberg trailed 2-0 for most of the game after the Thunder scored a pair in the second inning, but in the seventh the Tigers rallied on a two-out RBI single from senior Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier). However, the Tigers left a pair of runners stranded to end the inning and the game.

Freshman Julia Williams (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) was outstanding in the pitcher's circle again for the Tigers, as she allowed nine hits and four walks but continually wiggled out of jams to allow just two unearned runs.

A short time later, Wittenberg bounced back nicely with a 9-1 win over Newbury. The Tigers scored two in the first, four in the second and one in the third to take a commanding 7-1 lead. And then senior Brooklyn Cox (Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler) ended the game an inning early with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth as the game reached its run rule limit.

Snyder, senior Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), freshman Carly Cribbs (Rochester, Mich./Rochester) and freshman Ashlee Wright (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) each finished with two hits to power a 12-hit offensive attack. Amicon, Cribbs and Cox each drove in two runs in the game, while Wright scored a pair.
