Tigers Split Non-Conference Twin Bill With Mount St. Joseph

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg softball team played to a split with visiting Mount St. Joseph on a warm, sunny day at Betty Doughman Dillahunt Field in the first of four consecutive home engagements. The Tigers moved to 14-16 overall on the season.

The Tigers kicked off their four-date homestand with a 4-0 win in the early game and a 6-5 loss in the late game. Wittenberg hosts Wooster on Saturday, April 24, before rounding out their home slate with doubleheaders against Otterbein and Kenyon.

Senior pitcher Brooke Boswell (Hamilton, Ohio/Fairfield) earned her 11th win of the season in shutout style in Game 1, allowing only four hits for the second time in three games. She struck out five and walked only one in the victory.

The Tigers opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), and added two more in the sixth to complete the scoring line. Sophomore Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) went 3-for-3 with a run scored.

In Game 2, the Tigers started senior Melisa Shock (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) in the circle and she struck out four in five innings of work, allowing three runs to score on nine hits. Sophomore Anna Kvartunas (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) relieved Shock in the sixth and over two innings allowed three hits, including a three-run home run in the top of the seventh.

The Lions scored one in both the first and second innings before Wittenberg posted two in the bottom of the second. Mount St. Joseph broke the tie with one in the fourth, and though the Tigers took the lead with two in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it 5-3, the Lions' three-run home run in the top of the seventh made it 6-5 and Wittenberg could not answer in the last half inning.

Offensively, senior Jade Chivington (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) led the Tigers in Game 2 on 2-for-4 hitting with two RBIs. Allen also went 2-for-4, and Amicon was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
