KISSIMMEE, Fla.- With the Tigers kicking off the 2009 campaign with their spring break trip to Kissimee, Fla., the bats would not come around in a pair of losses on Opening Day. Wittenberg dropped the season-opener 5-1 at the hands of Indiana Wesleyan before dropping a meeting with St. Benedict, 3-1.
Junior Brooke Boswell (Hamilton, Ohio/Fairfield) had a pair of base hits against Indiana Wesleyan but the offense could not provide enough help for starting pitcher Melisa Shock (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook). In relief, Rachael Hatcher (West Carrollton, Ohio/West Carrollton) passed Carey Oakes for the all-time career lead in strikeouts. In 1.2 innings of work, Hatcher collected three punchouts to bring her total to 263, two clear of Oakes.
Against St. Benedict, the Tigers could never get the production at the plate to knock off the Blazers.
The Tigers continue their spring break trip with a pair of games on Sunday, March 8 against Shenandoah and Coe at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.
