Wittenberg Splits A Pair With Transylvania

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Halfway through a stretch of five straight home doubleheaders, the Wittenberg Tigers split a pair with visiting Transylvania at Dillahunt Field.

A 6-4 loss in the opener was followed by a 10-0 five-inning victory in the nightcap. That ran the Tigers' record to 9-7 with doubleheaders slated against Urbana on Thursday and Heidelberg on Saturday, also in Springfield.

In the opener, the Tigers rallied from a three-run hole in the top of the first inning to take a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning. However, the Pioneers struck for three more runs in the top of the sixth and held off a potential Wittenberg rally in the seventh inning. With two outs, the Tigers put two runners on base before Transylvania recorded the third out.

Sophomore pitcher Rachael Hatcher (West Carrollton, Ohio/West Carrollton) deserved a better fate as she went the distance, allowing four hits and two walks. However, two of Transylvania's six runs were unearned, thanks to four Wittenberg errors in the game. Offensively, junior Sarah Fetters (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) went 4-for-4 to lead the attack.

Wittenberg turned things around in the nightcap with a dominating 10-0 run-rule shortened victory. Thanks to the shutout pitching of senior Grace Wigton (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian), the Tiger offense put together a pair of five-run rallies to put the game away.

Wigton allowed just two hits and no walks in five stellar innings for her second win of the season. At the plate, the Tigers were keyed by Fetters with a 2-for-3 outing, including her first career home run in the fifth inning, senior Stephanie Zorn (Grapevine, Texas/Colleyville) with three runs batted in, and junior Erin Meredith (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) and freshman Cameron Catalfu (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) with two runs scored each.
