The Tigers won three of four games last week, but they were knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten in the NCAC on Sunday. Hiram scored a 6-2 win in Game 2 of a doubleheader to snap the Tigers' streak of seven straight conference wins this season and nine in a row dating back to last year.
Wittenberg will host Denison in a showdown for first place in the conference Tuesday. The Big Red (9-1 in the NCAC and ranked nationally by the National Softball Coaches Association) enter the doubleheader with a one game lead over the Tigers.
Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Campbell (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) drove in five runs in a doubleheader sweep of Kenyon. She went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and three runs scored in a 12-4 win in Game 1, and she added a crucial three-run triple in a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.
Both Hiram games were decided by identical 6-2 scores. The Tigers won the opener and the Terriers the nightcap. Senior first baseman Carisa Clagg (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern) continues to lead the NCAC in batting at .464 and triples with four. Freshman pitcher Carmen Montgomery (Springfield, Ohio/Southeastern) pitched three complete games and posted a 2.17 earned run average in 21 innings pitched for the week. The workhorse of the staff all season, Montgomery has a conference-best 15-2 record, including 7-0 in the NCAC.
