Men’s Volleyball Falls to Mount Union, 3-1

ALLIANCE, OH. – A back-and-forth battle from start to finish, Wittenberg's men's volleyball team fell on the road to a tough Mount Union squad, 3-1, on Saturday, March 15, at Timken Gymnasium in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) matchup.

The Tigers lost in scores of 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, and 29-27 and fall to 15-9 overall and 2-1 in the MCVL. With the victory, Mount Union, currently on a five-match win streak, takes control of the MCVL at 4-0 and is 14-8 on the season. Trine, at 2-0 MCVL, is the only other team without a loss in conference play.

The Purple Raiders led most of the first set behind a stunning .667 hitting percentage. Otherwise, the stats were mostly even, and all the other games were close in this one. There were nine ties and two lead changes in set two, seven ties and five lead changes in set three, and 19 ties and eight lead changes in set four. 

Team Leaders  

  • Michael Yurk  (Indianapolis, IN / Bishop Chatard) led the team in kills with a whopping 20 on 42 total attacks for 20 points. He also had seven digs.
  • Zach Newton (Morgantown, WV / Franklin Community) added 11 kills on 31 total attacks for 15 points. He led the team in digs with 20 and added four blocks.
  • Eli Halverson (Hamilton, OH / Badin) recorded 10 kills on 32 total attacks for 13 points. He also had three blocks and three service aces.
  • Adam Blair (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) had nine kills on 21 total attacks for 12 points. He also had six blocks.
  • Carson Hill (Liberty Township, OH / Lakota East) led the team in assists with 36. He also added three blocks.

 Team Comparison 

  • Wittenberg had 55 kills on 144 total attacks. The Tigers had 52 assists, four service aces, 44 digs, 16 blocks, and a hitting percentage of .167.
  • Mount Union tallied 59 kills on 131 total attacks. It also had 55 assists, four service aces, and 44 digs. The Purple Raiders also turned in a hitting percentage of .328.
