Tigers Place Fifth, Sixth At NCAC Outdoor Championships

OBERLIN, Ohio — The Wittenberg men's outdoor track and field team finished in a fifth-place tie while the women finished sixth at the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conferenc championships held at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio this weekend. 

Wabash College claimed their first-ever outdoor championship on the men's side while Ohio Wesleyan University took home the trophy on the women's.

The Wittenberg women collected eight All-NCAC designations in total and broke a school record in the process of claiming one individual championship. JuniorMary Pfeifer (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) broke her own school record in the 10,000-meter run by over 10 seconds with a time of 38:02.11 to earn the top spot in the event.

Junior Kari Domiano (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) finished second in both the 100 and 200 dashes, off the pace by just 0.1 seconds in the 200 version. Freshman Alea Taylor (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) added a second place in the long jump on a distance of 17-6.0.

The Tigers took third in four separate events, starting with Darcy Dubuc (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) and her 4:54.43 in the 1,500-meter run. Dubuc went on to combine with junior Catherine Kuerbitz (Cleveland, Ohio/Regina), juniorSamantha Iden (Pickerington, Ohio/North) and Domiano for third place in the 4x400 relay on a time of 4:06.12.

Sophomore Paige Lloyd (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf) turned in a pole vault of an even 10 feet and freshman Angela Roll (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) to round out the third-place and all-conference finishes for the women with a high jump of 5-1.75.

It was all about team effort on the men's side, and the team was led by the third-place finish of Thomas McElwee (Herriman, Utah/Blue Valley) thanks a heave of 174-5 in the javelin.

McElwee earned the men's lone All-NCAC award, given to the top three finishers in each event, but a contingent of strong finishes kept the weekend successful. The 4x400 relay team of freshman Chris Frierson (Cedar Hill, Texas/DeSoto), seniorJumar Guy (Fort Wayne, Ind./Southside), junior Jarrett Cowgill (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and junior Ryan Hagen (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led that contingent with a fourth-place showing on a time of 3:24.78.

Sophomores Trevor Grandy (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and Sven Isaacson (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) each turned in a fifth-place finish in the meet, Grandy in the 10,000-meter run on a time of 32:02.05 and Isaacson in the hammer throw with a distance of 145-10.

The Tigers have one meet remaining on the schedule with a trip to the University of Louisville on Friday, May 13, for the Cardinal Twilight at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Ky.
