During his tenure at Capital, Burgess led the men's program to the 2007 and 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) regular season championships, and he guided the team to the 2009 OAC Tournament championship. The 2009 team also qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament – the first postseason appearance in program history. The 2006 and 2007 teams also earned berths in the NCAA Division III Tournament, and Burgess was named OAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year in 2006. Combined between the men's and women's programs, Burgess stacked up a career record at Capital of 186-145-33, including an 87-63-12 OAC record.

He also was nominated for the NSCAA National Division III Coach of the Year Award. Off the field, Burgess served a four-year term as the Great Lakes Region Chair for the NCAA Division III National Championship Committee.

In addition, Burgess has served as a clinician in various capacities on behalf of the NSCAA, Columbus Crew SC, and Major League Soccer.

An accomplished player, Dwight split his college career between DePauw University and the University of Dayton. He was named team captain for a pair of teams that advanced to regional tournaments, he participated in international friendlies, and he was selected to development camps for the United States Men's National Program on two occasions.
